Red? Puffy? If so, you\u2019re probably wondering whether this should be cause for concern. Inflammation is a rather common symptom for many different medical problems, after all, and it can be hard to tell when it\u2019s an emergency-worthy situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, you\u2019ll find several possible causes of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpsperioimplants.com\/periodontal-therapy.html\">inflamed gums<\/a>. Regardless of what seems more similar to what you\u2019re experiencing, though, you should call your periodontist, just in case!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gingivitis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most popular reason for swollen gums is gingivitis \u2013 otherwise known as \u201cgum disease.\u201d When bacteria builds up in the mouth, specific strains can attack your gum tissue, resulting in irritation and triggering an immune response. Since gum disease can wreak havoc on your oral health and spread to other areas of your body, it\u2019s considered a dental emergency, and should be addressed promptly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pregnancy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your body can respond in a number of strange ways to pregnancy, and swollen gums is one of them. Unfortunately, the shift in hormones can also weaken your immune system and make it harder to fight off bacteria, increasing your risk of developing gingivitis. If you\u2019re pregnant, it\u2019s a good idea to check in regularly with your periodontist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitamin Deficiencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While often not an immediate emergency, vitamin deficiencies can have a huge impact on your health. Vitamin C, for example, affects how well your body can repair soft tissue and maintain the strength of your teeth. Inflammation that seems to be more chronic could very well be the result of lacking essential nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, swelling and inflammation is an immune system response, so many different types of infection can cause your gum tissue to puff up. Herpes and thrush are two good examples. Dental decay can also irritate your gums, especially if an abscess forms near your gumline. If you\u2019re feeling generally unwell or sick, you should call your doctor or periodontist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to See Your Periodontist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Swollen gums aren\u2019t always cause for concern, but this symptom can indicate you have a serious problem that needs to be addressed promptly.
